Angelokstro ist eine der wichtigsten byzantinischen Burgen in Griechenland und eine der ältesten. Sie existierte bereits seit dem 7. Jahrhundert. Es befindet sich auf der Insel Korfu an der Spitze des höchsten Gipfels der Küstenlinie der Insel an der Nordküste in der Nähe von Paleokastritsa und wurde auf besonders steilem und felsigem Gelände errichtet, Es steht 305 Meter auf einem steilen Felsen über dem Meer und überblickt die Stadt Korfu und die Berge des griechischen Festlandes im Südosten sowie ein weiteres gebiet von Korfu in Richtung Nordosten und Nordwesten.

Der Ursprung seines Namens ist nicht ganz klar, wobei einige Historiker erwähnen, dass Michael I. Komnenos Doukas, Despot von Epirus, manchmal auch Michael Angelos genannt, Korfu an Epirus annektierte und nach seinem Tod Michael II. Komnenos Doukas, sein Sohn, weiter befestigte das Gebiet und benannte es nach ihm und seinem Vater: „Angelokastro“.

Die Despoten waren mit der Komnenos-Dynastie der byzantinischen Kaiser verwandt. Heute wird es auf den touristischen Hinweisschildern in der Umgebung fälschlicherweise als St. Angelos’ Schloss bezeichnet.

Bevor die Venezianer Korfu eroberten, gab es drei Burgen, die die Insel vor Angriffen verteidigten: Die Burg Kassiopi im Nordwesten der Insel, Angelokastro im Westen und Gardiki im Süden.

Bei Ausgrabungen im Jahr 1997 wurden zwei frühchristliche Platten auf der Spitze der Akropolis freigelegt, was darauf hindeutet, dass der Ort in der frühbyzantinischen Zeit (zwischen dem 5. Und 7. Jahrhundert n. Chr.) besiedelt war.

Es kann vernünftigerweise angenommen werden, dass die Komnenoi, die seit Byzanz 1071 n. Chr. Ihre Herrschaft über Süditalien verloren, der Burg viel Aufmerksamkeit geschenkt haben müssen, da Korfu zwischen dem 11. Und 12. Jahrhundert standartmäßig zur Grenze im Westen des Byzantinischen Reiches wurde. Sie dienen dazu, Byzanz von seinen gefährlichen Feinden im Westen zu trennen und zu verteidigen. Gleichzeitig trugen die akritischen und windgepeitschten Befestigungen dazu bei, Korfu vor den Normannen von Sizilien, deren ständige Einfälle die Insel in einem Schauplatz militärischer Konflikte verwandelt hatten.

Die Burg genoss während der Zeit der venezianischen Herrschaft (1386-1797) eine beträchtliche Bedeutung.

Von 1387 bis Ende des 16. Jahrhunderts war Angelokastro die Hauptstadt von Korfu und wurde im frühen 16. Jahrhundert Sitz des Proweditore Generale del Levante, der Kommandant der auf Korfu stationierten venezianischen Flotte und Gouverneur der Ionischen Inseln war. Die Befestigung muss in dieser Zeit fertiggestellt worden sein.

Angelokastro war maßgeblich an der Abwehr der Osmanen bei drei Belagerungen von Korfu beteiligt; bei der ersten großen Belagerung von Korfu im Jahr 1537, bei der Belagerung von 1571 und der zweiten großen Belagerung von Korfu im Jahr 1716. Später verfiel es und wurde im 19. Jahrhundert verlassen. 1999 wurde es in seinen heutigen Zustand versetzt.

An der höchsten Stelle befindet sich die Zitadelle mit ihrem Haupttor im Norden, das von einem runden Turm geschützt wird. Die Ruinen gegenüber dem Haupttor waren die Quartiere der Garnison und 3 unterirdische Zisternen versorgten die Burg mit Wasser. Die Zinnen der Mauern sind heute nur noch in der nordwestlichen Ecke erhalten. Am höchsten Punkt der Zitadelle steht das Erzengel - Michael – Kirchenlein, das an der Stelle einer vermutlich frühchristlichen 3-schiffigen Kirche errichtet wurde. Mehrere Gräber in der Nähe wurden aus massivem Fels gehauen. Die Wandmalereien sind relativ modern und stammen aus dem 18. Jahrhundert.
