Top places to visit in Corfu
Paleokastritsa is arguably the most famous picturesque village of the island of Corfu located 25 km northwest of Corfu Town. The word Paleokastritsa literally means old fortress, witnessing the existence of such a castle on the rocky cave where now stands the Monastery of the Virgin. This cosmopolitan resort stretches along a coastal road around stunning bays and a picturesque harbor where the excursion boats depart for the nearby and isolated beaches. At the end of the road, right after the main harbor is the Monastery of the Virgin that dominates the village. The monastery hosts an interesting collection of post Byzantine icons, books and other objects. There, you will discover precious icons from the 15th century.
Corfu old town
Corfu town, especially for its oldest part, is one of the most charming and romantic places of all the Greece. It is a perfect example of ancient Venetian and Byzantine art that will be able to fascinate you with its little streets and its panoramic points. Surrounded by the sea, the old town of Kerkyra is closed between the two ancient fortresses. Walking between high old houses, you will buy traditional products in ancient cellars, surrounded by stone staircase, old Venetian walls and hidden gardens. Every single building, every single street will appear like an open museum, but the joie de vivre of the local people will remember you that the old town is also full of life and full of surprises. The paved streets and the ancient buildings will bring you to the large beautiful Esplanade and the romantic gallery of Liston; a place that you can’t miss to visit.
The Achillion Palace can be found in the Village of Gastouri, 10 km’s south west of the town of Corfu. The stunning appearance of this stately palace takes the visitor back in history to when the palace was inhabited by two great figures from European history whose only common bond was their adoration for Corfu, Greece and its culture, Empress Elisabeth of Austria (known as 'Sissi') and Kaiser William II of Germany. Wandering through the fabulous gardens, you will be taken on a trip through Greek mythology as you walk between the numerous statues of Greek historical figures, including the nine Muses, Greek philosophers and of course Achilles – the hero of Greek mythology after whom the palace was named.
The location of Kanoni with the church of PanagiaVlacherna below and the Mouse Island (Pontikonissi) are the most famous and photographed spots of Corfu. Legend has it, that Mouse Island was formed when the ship that had taken Odysseus back to Ithaca, his home port, was turned into stone by Poseidon, god of the sea, angry at being defied by the Phaeacians. It is also very frequent that you see an airplane landing and taking off from this spot, as the airport of Corfu is right next to the church.
This exquisite church, which used to be called The Church of The Pentecost, was built in 1713 during Venetian rule by Daniel Kombitsi, the offspring of a Cretan aristocratic family who came to Corfu in 1669 after the fall of Candia, modern day Iraklion.
