Description

Start the day with a visit to one of Corfu’s most picturesque coastal spots. Explore the Byzantine Monastery of the Virgin, perched on a hill with breathtaking views of the turquoise sea. Optional boat tours to explore the nearby sea caves and hidden beaches are available for those who want a closer look at the coastline. Travel uphill to the charming village of Lakones, often called the “Balcony of the Ionian” for its sweeping panoramic views. Enjoy a traditional Corfiot lunch at a local taverna—expect local dishes like pastitsada (slow-cooked beef in red sauce with pasta), sofrito (veal in garlic wine sauce) and fresh Greek salad. Visit the neoclassical palace built by Empress Elisabeth of Austria (“Sisi”). Admire the gardens filled with statues, including the famous “Dying Achilles,”. A short stop at Kanoni for a classic postcard view: the Vlacherna Monastery on the water, with the iconic Pontikonisi (Mouse Island) in the background. A peaceful and scenic spot, perfect for photos and a short walk. End the day exploring UNESCO-listed Old Corfu Town. Wander through narrow cobbled alleys, admire the Venetian, French, and British influences, and perhaps visit the Liston Promenade, Saint Spyridon Church, or browse the many local shops and cafés. There's typically free time here for relaxing or shopping before heading back.

Extra information

What to expect
Paleokastritsa is arguably the most famous picturesque village of the island of Corfu, located 25 km northwest of Corfu Town. The word Paleokastritsa literally means old fortress, witnessing the existence of such a castle on the rocky cave where the Monastery of the Virgin now stands. This cosmopolitan resort stretches along a coastal road around stunning bays and a picturesque harbor where the excursion boats depart for the nearby and isolated beaches. At the end of the road, right after the main harbor is the Monastery of the Virgin that dominates the village. The monastery hosts an interesting collection of post Byzantine icons, books and other objects. There, you will discover precious icons from, the 15th century.

The Achillion Palace can be found in the Village of Gastouri, 10 km’s south west of the town of Corfu. The stunning appearance of this stately palace takes the visitor back in history to when the palace was inhabited by two great figures from European history whose only common bond was their adoration for Corfu, Greece and its cultural figures, Empress Elisabeth of Austria (known as 'Sissi') and Kaiser William II of Germany. Wandering through the fabulous gardens, you will be taken on a trip through Greek mythology as you walk between the numerous statues of Greek historical figures, including the nine muses, Greek philosophers and of course Achilles – the hero of Greek mythology after whom the palace was named.

Perched high above the coastline, the village of Lakones offers one of the most breathtaking panoramic views in Corfu—earning its nickname, the “Balcony of the Ionian.” With its stone-built houses, narrow lanes, and authentic character, Lakones is a peaceful escape into traditional island life.

Here, you’ll enjoy a leisurely traditional Corfiot meal at a local taverna with a terrace overlooking Paleokastritsa Bay. The view stretches across emerald hills, dramatic cliffs, and the sparkling Ionian Sea—perfect for a relaxing and scenic lunch break.

The location of Kanoni with the church of PanagiaVlacherna and Mouse Island (Pontikonissi), are the most famous and photographed spots of Corfu. Legend has it, that Mouse Island was formed when the ship that had taken Odysseus back to Ithaca, his home port, was turned into stone by Poseidon, God of the Sea, who was angry at being defied by the Phaeacians. You can often see an airplane landing and taking off from this spot, as the airport of Corfu is right next to the church. Corfu Town, especially the old part, is one of the most charming and romantic places in all of Greece. It is a perfect example of ancient Venetian and Byzantine art that will fascinate you with its' little streets and panoramic view points. Surrounded by the sea, the old town of Kerkyra (Corfu) is situated between the two ancient fortresses. Walking between high old houses, you can buy traditional products in ancient cellars, surrounded by stone staircases, old Venetian walls and hidden gardens. Every single building and street will appear like an open museum, but the joie de vivre of the local people will remind you that the old town is also full of life and full of surprises. The paved streets and the ancient buildings will bring you to the large beautiful esplanade and the romantic gallery of Liston. A place that you must visit whilst you're on our beautiful island.
